Moving Your Parent to Assisted Living – How Can I Make the Transition

Have your parents decided that the time is right for them to move to an assisted living community or facility? It’s a big decision, but it doesn’t mean they are automatically comfortable with it. Just because they know it’s the best choice for their health, it doesn’t mean it’s not scary, stressful, and even depressing for them. This is where you can be of help by using these tips to assist them with the transition into assisted living.

What is the Timeline?

For many people, disorganization and confusion can add to the stress. To make the transition as smooth as possible, you’ll want to set a timeline with your parent so they know how things will play out and so they can be prepared mentally and physically. They may need to sell their home first, and there is no doubt they have lots of packing to do and probably some decluttering before moving to their new space.

Schedule a Tour of the Facility Beforehand

If you have a facility in mind, or you’ve narrowed down the options, it’s a good idea to schedule a tour of the facility with your parent. This is a chance to get a feel for the grounds, the community, the room layout and size, staff, what’s included in terms of healthcare and support, and the amenities. It’s also the time to ask any questions you may have. Your parent may even want to chat with some of the residents to get their view on living there. If you’re looking for assisted living Webster Groves MO, facilities such as McKnight Place offer personalized tours so you can ask as many questions as you want. Seeing the facility in person can dispel much of the fear and stress they are currently feeling.

Focus on the Positives of Assisted Living

In your parent’s mind, they may be focused on the negatives and what it means to move out of their home. Rather than get too wrapped up in this line of thinking, focus on the positives of assisted living. Remind them why this is a great decision for them, including how they will make friends and socialize more. Talk to them about the activities that will be offered, and how their health needs will be looked after.

Also, assure your parent that the facility they are in is trusted as facilities like this are usually recommended by a trusted elderly placement consultant. This assures them that they are in the right place and will be taken care of.

Bring Along Personal Touches

Part of settling into a new place is making it feel like home and bringing personal touches will help. This means family photos for a photo wall, artwork, a couple of small pieces of furniture, bedding and so forth. It’s the items that will remind your parent that this is their home. They will be surrounded by things they love, and it will be comfortable for them.

Visit as Often as Possible and Check In

Visiting is always going to be important, but during the transition, you want to check in on them as often as possible. In-person visits are great, but if you can’t do that as much as you’d like, call them and ask how they are doing.

The fact is that the transition into assisted living will be a process for your parent and they will go through a bevy of emotions. Being there for them, offering support and helping them to settle in is essential.
